The FTC is concerned about how companies are using their big data. FTC has warned in a new report that while big data can benefit under-served populations through better opportunities for education, credit, health care and employment, it can also lead to reduced opportunities and targeting of vulnerable consumers for fraud and higher prices.
CompTIA conducted a survey of 402 businesses and IT professionals regarding their big data projects. The report found that organizations are willing to work with third parties for help with their data initiatives.

IoT
There were several articles about the new cellular network software, Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), that Ericsson announced at CES.
Also at CES, Samsung and Microsoft announced their partnership in developing IoT devices based on Windows 10. They plan on creating products that can run on the platform and integrate with other companies developing hardware and services on Microsoft’s OS.
Annapurna Labs Inc., who was bought by Amazon last year, just announced they will start selling chips for use in next-generation Wifi and in IoT devices.

Cognitive Computing
Forbes talks with VP of IBM Watson Steve Gold on how IBM is taking on the world. Steve discussed the advancements being made in cognitive computing, calling it the arrival of the new “era” in computing. He used the example, “cognitive computers don’t need to be programmed—they can learn for themselves.”
